Quest chain, NPCs, and breeding concepts for Animal Husbandry and Genetics.
Animal Husbandry requires Animal Handling level 50 before it can be unlocked. Gisli in Serbule is the primary Animal Handling trainer (stablemaster). Crelpin in the Fae Realm and Sir Abbley in Statehelm also train it at higher levels.
Gisli loves Fluorite gems, Horseshoes, and magic equipment with Animal Handling prerequisites.
Tumak is a ghost who spawns at his former house in Povus at 9 AM game time, walks north toward Old Town then toward the lake, and despawns around 10 AM game time. The window is short.
He does not attack unless you attack first. He has high evasion — stun him to make him vulnerable. Weak to Psychic, Nature, and Electricity damage.
He drops the Ghostly Letter plus level 75 equipment.
Gerrux's lore: Tumak was mated to Kimeta (Gerrux's sister) and was executed for betraying Povus. Kimeta never believed he was guilty.
Kimeta's ghost haunts her former house in the Sprawl district of Povus. She only appears between 8 PM and 1:15 AM game time, and only when ghosts are actively spawning in the Sprawl and her house light is off.
⚠ Do not give the Ghostly Letter to Gerrux — it must go to Kimeta directly. The letter is illegible to the living.
Give her the Ghostly Letter. She gives you the Ghostly Key in return.
The "ghost night" players refer to is simply the Povus nighttime ghost-spawn window — not a separate timed world event. If ghosts aren't spawning in the Sprawl, Kimeta won't appear.
Give the Ghostly Key to Gerrux as a gift. He recognizes it as a key made of ectoplasm — his sister Kimeta's ghost key — and tells you about the real key she threw into the river before she died.
This unlocks the quest Kimeta's Key.
Gerrux loves Swords and Dirks. He is in Povus Old Town near Leah Bowman.
"There's a ranalon who deals in river treasures. Maybe you can find this frog and beat the secret out of him!"
Errruka is a ranalon in a cave in Povus. Talk to him about Kimeta's key. He'll agree to search for it but asks you to return the following game day.
When you return, barter him 25 Live Frogs or 1 Black Pearl to receive Kimeta's Key.
Errruka has Barter and Store services. His cap items include Crystals, Fish, and Seashells — the Black Pearl counts as a Crystal. He loves Live Frogs.
Bring Kimeta's Key to Gerrux. He opens the chest his sister left behind and finds her gizmos and technical notes — he hands them all to you.
◆ Reward: 100 Favor · Secrets of Arthropod Genetics (skill book) · Beginner's Arthropod Gene Analyzer ×10
Reading the skill book unlocks Genetics: Arthropods. After completing this quest, Gerrux also offers barters for additional analyzers (cost: Xogrite Chunks).
Gerrux's barter table (unlocked after completing the quest above) includes the Ungulate skill book and analyzers.
After completing Kimeta's Key, Gerrux offers barters for genetics items. Trade him 10 Xogrite Chunks to receive Secrets of the Ungulates, which unlocks Genetics: Ungulates (horses).
◆ Full Gerrux barter table (post-quest):

Genetics is a sub-skill that lets you analyze and selectively breed creatures for specific traits. There are currently two branches, each requiring its own skill book and analyzer type.
| Branch | Covers | Skill Book | Analyzer | How to Unlock |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Genetics: Arthropods | Bees and similar creatures | Secrets of Arthropod Genetics | Arthropod Gene Analyzer / Beginner's | Complete Kimeta's Key quest (see above) |
| Genetics: Ungulates | Horses and hooved animals | Secrets of the Ungulates | Ungulate Gene Analyzer / Beginner's | Separate unlock — not yet fully documented |
Keep a Gene Analyzer in your inventory. When you kill a creature of the matching anatomy type, you will be offered the option to gene-analyze it.
› Regular analyzer: 5% chance to break on use.
› Beginner's (EZ) analyzer: Easier to use; same 5% break chance.
⚠ Many cultures in the game consider genetics study taboo. Expect NPC reactions.
The following is based on community research and experimentation. The math is real — Punnett square probability applies directly to how visible traits propagate in your stable.
Standard Punnett square logic applies to the visual traits you can see in your stable. The game's math tracks this very closely — working out probabilities by hand before you have the Genetics skill gives you useful predictions.
› Positive stat mutations are possible and can be bred toward intentionally.
› Negative mutation chance can be reduced over successive generations to the point where it becomes negligible.
› Mixing a 1-trait line with a 2-trait line produces more instability than mixing two 2-trait lines together. Even more volatile than expected.
The safe approach: breed for one stat per pair, running two separate pairs in parallel. For example, one pair locked to Enthusiasm, the other to Temperament.
Slower overall, but outcomes are predictable and the gene pool stays clean. Good for beginners and for running a control line alongside an experimental program.
The accelerated approach: run two pairs each working on two traits simultaneously, then reserve a third pair for genes you want to introduce in a later generation.
Faster progress, but outcomes are volatile. Tracking probability across two traits at once requires more careful math. A control line running alongside this is strongly recommended for reference.
The probability split you see on desired traits during crossbreeding reflects how cleanly each parent line was established. The cleaner your lines going in, the more predictable the merge.
After establishing two separate lines optimized for different traits, you merge them. Plan for this at the third offspring generation or later.
› Take the first two crossbred offspring and build a new control pair from them before breeding further.
› Use that control pair to breed toward positive mutations in subsequent generations.
› Introduce a control offspring for stability if the line becomes too volatile.
⚠ Mixing a 1-stat line with a 2-stat line is even more unstable than mixing two 2-stat lines. Avoid unless intentional.
With enough generations of selective breeding, it is possible to produce offspring with a specific set of genes at high probability on every birth. The math compounds well — a mature, well-built line can get very consistent results.
› Visual traits (coat color, markings, and other appearance genes) follow the same Punnett square math as stats and can be bred in alongside them.
› Appearance genes are a long project but fully achievable with a systematic approach.
Genetics is a multi-generation investment. Having a partner run a control line while you advance an experimental line is an efficient division of labor.
| NPC | Location | Relevance |
|---|---|---|
| Gerrux | Povus | Quest giver for Arthropod Genetics unlock. Loves Swords and Dirks. |
| Errruka the Benefactor | Errruka's Cave, Povus | Ranalon with Barter + Store. Trades Kimeta's Key for 25 Live Frogs or 1 Black Pearl. Loves Live Frogs. |
| Plaudius | Statehelm | Likes Husbandry-related items. Useful for favor gifts. |
| Gisli | Serbule | Primary Animal Handling trainer (prerequisite skill). Stablemaster. Loves Fluorite, Horseshoes, magic AH gear. |
| Crelpin | Fae Realm | Also trains Animal Handling. Also teaches Cooking and Sushi Preparation. |
› Get Animal Handling to 50 first. It is the prerequisite for everything here. Gisli in Serbule is the main trainer; Sir Abbley in Statehelm teaches cap unlocks.
› Stock up on Live Frogs or a Black Pearl before visiting Errruka — you'll need to return on the next game day with one of those ready.
› Don't sell Beginner's Gene Analyzers. The 10 you get from Gerrux's quest are your starting supply. They have a 5% break chance so they deplete over time.
› Genetics: Arthropods covers bees; Genetics: Ungulates covers horses. If you are primarily a horse breeder, the Arthropod line is still useful as a stepping stone and for bee pets.
› Pasha in Ilmari Desert teaches Saddlery, which pairs with Animal Husbandry for horse gear. He stocks husbandry supplies and has a stable.
